What if sunshine was a phenomena that children learned about in textbooks? What if snow was only be viewable in a museum, behind glass; never to be built into a snowman or caught on your tongue? Behold The Museum of Weather.
Life on our planet is changing rapidly. Technology is expanding
around us, the population is growing, and the earth is feeling the
effects repeated abuse. In a near future, the earth may not be an
acceptable place to live. When the earth's surface can no longer
sustain us, humans will likely move underground, underwater, or
into space. This enormous change will cause many, everyday
occurrences that we hardly notice to become a subject to be
learned about. Weather, a phenomena familiar to every human on
earth, will need to be explained. This is where The Museum of
Weather becomes important.
These three pieces depict parts of the museum that a patron
would visit. The first addresses the notion of feeling of sunshine
on your body as a phenomena to that would be simulated in a
museum. The second shows that umbrellas would become an
artifact to be displayed because their true purpose is gone. The
third examines snow as a building material that will never be
Obviously I don't know what museums of the future with look or
function like, or even if they exist, but this project is for the
people on earth now. I want people to understand that our
actions now will effect of the rest of humanity spends their days.
Will sunshine be an idea to be read about in books or see in a
movie? Will snow only be viewable in a museum, behind glass,
never to be built into a snowman or caught on your tongue? We
take these small happiness for granted, but if they are lost
forever, this world will be very different place.
